Abstract
Recent studies have suggested immunologic abnormalities in some schizophrenic patients .In the present study, we compared serum concentration of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) of 19 KSM-III-R schizophrenics with 19 age
and
sex
matched healthy control subjects. Among schizophrenics. 11 were first onset neuroleptic na?e, and 8 were drug free for 8~70 months at the time of the investigation Serum IL-2 and IL-2R concentrations were determined by CytoscreenTM Human
Interleukin-2
kit (sensitivity ; 8.7 pg/ml) and CytoscreenTM Human interleukin-2 Receptor ELISA kit (sensitivity ; 32pg/ml).
Serum IL-2 concentration of 70.7% (15/19) of schizophrenics and 26.3% (4/19) of healthy control subjects are not detectable by present experimental method No difference was found between mean serum IL-2R level of schizophrenics and that of
healthy
controls. There was no correlation between IL 2R and age, age of onset, duration of illness, and severity of psychopathology rated by GPRS in schizophrenics. More sensitive methodologies are requested to evaluate the immunological disturbances in
the
pathogenesis of some schizophrenics.
